Issues/themes:
  The “Institutional Support for Protected Areas in Albania” project will strengthen both central and local offices of the Albania’s Ministry of Environment, Forest and Water Administration (MoEFWA) by developing its capacity to systemically plan and manage protected areas. Specific needs for the institutional strengthening of the MoEFWA were identified jointly by the project partners.
Expected outputs:
  • Increased technical, procedural and infrastructural capacities of MoEFWA central and local administrations.
• The development of a set of tools for the effective management of the Buna River and Shebenik-Jabllanicë protected areas using an ecosystem approach.
• The creation of management plans for the two protected areas following IUCN WCPA (World Commission on Protected Areas) Management Planning Guidelines.
• The preparation of a reference handbook for participatory protected area management planning in Albania to be formally adopted by the Albanian government.
• Improved protection of the Buna River and Shebenik-Jabllanicë sites to be more effective conservation and development units.

  Establishment of the regional platform for nature conservation planning and coordination, comprised of IUCN and responsible national authorities. Improve capacities of experts responsible for planning in nature conservation and resource management. Assessment of the state of nature conservation systems and needs assessment in selected countries of South-Eastern Europe. Definition of national conservation priorities and development of mid-term national conservation priority action plans. Implementation of selected priority actions. Improved flow of information on protected areas toward the European Environment Agency (EEA) and the World Database on Protected Areas (WDPA)
